New Oxford American Dictionary: 'Podcast' Is the Word of the Year

December 13, 2005 • By News Staff

The editors of the New Oxford American Dictionary have selected "podcast" as the Word of the Year for 2005.  Podcast is defined as "a digital recording of a radio broadcast or similar program, made available on the Internet for downloading to a personal audio player."  Podcasts are recorded messages of varied length that are archived and available for your listening any time you choose.

What kind of equipment or software do you need?
Any digital audio player (MP3, iPod) or computer with audio-playing software and speakers can play podcasts.  It may be as simple as clicking on a Podcast link and listening to the message.  Podcasting's essence is about content (audio or video) for an audience that wants to listen to what they want, when they want, where they want, and how they want.
